Before this piece, I had tried to paint flowers and would get easily overwhelmed, but after spending time working on my technique and style, this was my first official floral painting. It is an incredibly special piece, as it felt like a new world was opened up to me.
I focused on using my brushstrokes to communicate the colors and textures that I saw. I fell in love with how the dark fuchsia peeks out from in between the lightest pale pink on the petals of the peonies, and the fluffy white puff on the end of the scabiosa stem with which I used slight shifts in gray tones to convey just how full it was. Then there was the rich blue from the vase, it doesn’t take attention away from the flowers, but adds a beautiful focal point with the little bird that is perfectly placed.
This painting is a favorite, and I think it would bring a bit of light and life into a home. It’s just the right size for an entryway, kitchen, on top of a buffet or side board, or as a part of a gallery wall.

The brass bud vase absolutely caught my eye, the strong curves of the body, the lady-like ruffle of the rim. I loved the way the patina on the brass looked like it was made up of a patchwork of colors. And the subtle white rose with its natural green leaves served as the perfect compliment to the boldness of the brass, sharing the spotlight rather than playing second fiddle.
Using my brushstrokes to make confident marks, I focused on recording the shapes of exactly where I saw lights, darks, and even colors without questioning what I was seeing. This is what made the vase truly come to life. I also really loved using muted tones, and mixing a bit of the "brass” pigment into all the other colors which gave this painting an antique feel, rather than something modern. I believe this highlights the charm of the bud vase itself.
It is a classical still-life that meets modern Impressionism. This painting will give just the right touch of timeless beauty to a bookshelf, a kitchen, or a gallery wall.
